Foot-and-mouth disease: district calls for vigilance

Following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in a water buffalo in the Brandenburg district of Märkisch Oderland, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg is also monitoring the situation very closely - and is calling on people to be vigilant and cautious. The primary goal is to prevent an outbreak of the highly contagious animal disease in Waldeck-Frankenberg.

The disease can be transmitted from animal to animal or from humans to animals. The virus itself is harmless to humans. However, they can carry the pathogens on their hands, clothing or dirty shoes - and thus pass them on unknowingly.

Specifically, the district has therefore recommended that all animal keepers in Waldeck-Frankenberg minimise contact between visitors and their animals or comply with appropriate hygiene measures. Animal parks and petting zoos have been called upon to prevent direct contact between visitors and susceptible animals such as goats, sheep, cattle, pigs or wild animals wherever possible - as have providers of animal-assisted therapies or activities such as alpaca walks and circus events. Farmers and commercial livestock farms are also being sensitised once again to observe the applicable hygiene and biosecurity measures. Hunters have also been urged once again to be vigilant, as the disease can also spread among wild animals.

Pet owners should always be vigilant and keep an eye on the health of their animals. In the event of symptoms of illness, a veterinary practice should also be consulted immediately.
