Geotope 2025: Geopark calls for proposals

The Wichtelsteine near Frankenau and the Riesenstein near Naumburg-Heimarshausen are two examples of a Geotope of the Year in the GrenzWelten National Geopark. Since 2017, an expert jury has been selecting a special geological formation for this title. It relies on suggestions from geologically interested laypeople who wander through the GrenzWelten with open eyes. In 2025, the National Geopark is once again calling for proposals for the Geotope of the Year to be submitted by 1 March and is looking forward to a lively response.

Geotopes are defined as geological formations of inanimate nature that provide insights into the development of the earth and life. Examples include outcrops of rocks or soils as well as special natural creations such as karst caves or rock formations. Geotopes also have a special geological significance. They tend to be rare or admirably beautiful and are therefore worthy of preservation as geotopes, and are just as valuable for science and research as they are for teaching nature and local history.

Proposals for the Geotope of the Year 2025 can be submitted by individuals, citizens' groups or associations. The proposal must include a brief description of the formation and a justification of what makes the geotope so special that it should be honoured. The winner(s) will be selected by the Geopark jury and presented to the public in late spring.

Proposals can be submitted by post to the project office "Nationaler Geopark GrenzWeltem", Auf Lülingskreuz 60, 34497 Korbach or by e-mail. The Geopark is also available to answer any queries on 05631 954-1512.
