Twelve children win the balloon flying competition

Last year, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg celebrated its 50th anniversary. An anniversary festival was held for the citizens of Korbach on the last weekend of September. Young visitors in particular spent the two days enjoying the many fun and games on offer in the green area. The youth department also offered a colourful programme in this area. This included a balloon flight according to modern standards. Many cards were sent into the sky and brought joy to those who found them. The prize-giving ceremony has now taken place in the district hall in Korbach. Together with the first district councillor Karl-Friedrich Frese, the head of the youth department, Andreas Strake, and Carmen Debus-Nordmann from the youth department, children's eyes lit up at the award ceremony.

Twelve children between the ages of three and eleven looked on happily as they received their prizes from Karl-Friedrich Frese, First District Councillor, at the balloon flight awards ceremony. One of the main prizes for the longest flight went to five-year-old Ella Marie. Her balloon flew an impressive 261 kilometres. Second place went to eight-year-old Eva, whose balloon travelled a full 175 kilometres. Paul, eleven years old, took third place. His balloon managed to fly 162 kilometres. The other cards were discovered in the region and sent back to the Youth Service. "We are delighted to be able to welcome the winners and their families back here at the district administration in Korbach," said the First District Councillor at the start of the event.

The Foster Children's Service and Adoption Counselling Service - which are part of the Youth Department - organised the "Weitflug" event at their stand and informed visitors about their daily work. This includes the acquisition, assessment and training of new foster and standby foster families, counselling and support for foster families and systems of origin, training and further education for foster parents, children and parent groups as well as the selection and professional support of foster parents in the placement of children. "Many people don't realise exactly what the district administration does. The anniversary celebration was a good opportunity to open our doors and give an insight into our diverse tasks," continued Frese.

Flying balloons is a classic at all festivals and continues to bring joy to children and adults alike. To ensure that the campaign does not neglect the environment, biodegradable balloons made from natural raw materials were used by the Youth Service.
