District and city concerned about developments at Continental
The district of Waldeck-Frankenberg and the town of Korbach are expressing concern about the Continental Group's latest restructuring plans. The announced spin-off and possible sale of various company divisions, in particular Contitech, raises fears for the future of the Korbach site.
Conti is an important employer
"We are concerned that this development could seriously jeopardise the location in Korbach," explained Jürgen van der Horst, District Administrator of Waldeck-Frankenberg, Karl-Friedrich Frese, First District Councillor, and Stefan Kieweg, Mayor of Korbach, in a joint statement. "Continental is an important employer in Waldeck-Frankenberg. A weakening of the company would have far-reaching consequences for our region."
Concerns about job cuts
The district and town are particularly worried about possible job cuts in connection with the reorganisation. "The announcement of this massive restructuring in the Group has already led to uncertainty among employees in Korbach," emphasise van der Horst, Frese and Kieweg. "A possible loss of jobs would not only hit the affected families hard - but also the entire regional economy."
Maintaining strength as a business location
The District Administrator, First District Councillor and Mayor jointly emphasise that the current developments could have a lasting negative impact on the quality of the business location. "Korbach and the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg have established themselves as an attractive location for industry and commerce. The break-up of a traditional company like Continental could significantly penalise our business location."
The municipal representatives appeal to Continental's management to take the interests of the region and its employees into account in all future decisions. Together, they reaffirm their willingness to work with all those involved to develop concepts that take account of the company's objectives while securing jobs and contributing to sustainable site development.
