New construction of the Berliner Schule in Korbach: the basic threshold has been laid

When a multi-storey school building in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district is constructed almost entirely in timber for the first time - 90 per cent to be precise - it is worthy of a special celebration. Only the necessary stairwells, the lift shaft and the basement of the new Berlin School in Korbach are being built in reinforced concrete. District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst and First District Councillor Karl-Friedrich Frese were therefore able to invite guests to a new kind of groundbreaking ceremony instead of the old tradition of laying the foundation stone.

Together with the members of the district committee and other invited guests, they filled a "time capsule" with a daily newspaper, construction drawings of the building and a few coins and included the certificates from the day of the ceremony. "Perhaps we are even establishing a new tradition with this groundbreaking ceremony," said the District Administrator and First District Councillor with a view to other possible future timber constructions of school buildings.

The members of the district committee were able to see for themselves at the ceremony that the new construction of the Berlin school is progressing well. A three-storey building is being erected; the ground floor will house the administration as well as the childcare centre. Music and creative rooms as well as the canteen round off the ground floor. The classrooms and differentiation rooms are located on the first and first floors. Two inner courtyards in the compact building provide the necessary lighting for corridors and quiet zones.

Another first for a new school building: a large toilet facility has been dispensed with in consultation with the school management. Instead, there are unisex toilets, i.e. individual toilets with hand basins without their own anteroom. The school is designed for four classes, which means 16 classes with around 400 children.
