Social prize: District accepts proposals until 31 May

Two years ago, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg changed its guidelines for awarding prizes in recognition of special commitment. "We wanted to emphasise the special nature of the award more strongly and have therefore doubled the prize money," emphasises District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst. The financial recognition has increased from 2,500 euros to 5,000 euros for the main prizes and from 500 euros to 1,000 euros for the youth prizes, which are awarded in the categories of culture and nature. The adjustment of the awarding rhythm is also aimed at a higher status: In each category, deserving committed individuals could now only become award winners every four years and therefore less frequently than previously every second year.

The awarding of prizes according to the new guidelines began last year with the Culture Prize and the Youth Culture Prize, and will now be followed in 2024 by the prize to honour special voluntary social commitment. All citizens are invited to nominate individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the social sector through award-worthy voluntary work.

The prize - which also recognises the promotion of the common good - was created to complement the existing awards in the fields of monument protection, culture and nature and was awarded for the first time in 2012. "Especially in the area of social services of general interest, there are numerous citizens, associations and organisations that look after impaired people in need of care, care for senior citizens or create special offers for this group of people," says Karl-Friedrich Frese, First District Councillor and Head of Social Affairs. In some cases, this commitment has been in place for decades. "These individuals, groups or associations should be honoured with the Social Award."

Informal proposals for the award of the prize of honour will be accepted by the Social Affairs Department at the address Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg, FD 4.1, attn. Mr Berges, Südring 2, 34497 Korbach or by e-mail to henning.berges@lkwafkb.de. The nomination should include Name of the nominee, address, description of the special voluntary commitment in the social sector, length of time for which it has been carried out and whether the nominee has already been honoured for this in another form. Nominations for award winners can be made until 31 May 2024.
