New Geopark GrenzWeltengeo-station in Burgwald
The GrenzWeltenNational Geopark is pleased to have a new geo-station in Burgwald-Birkenbringhausen. The information board with a striking stone stele was erected in the area of the natural monument "Ederstede" or also known as "Klingelstede" and thus enhances the hiking trail there.
The five to six metre thick red sandstones of the Ederstede attracted a lot of attention last year. They were even chosen as Geotope of the Year in 2020 after the mayor of the Burgwald municipality, Lothar Koch, submitted the proposal to the Geopark project office. In addition to the great interest shown by citizens, a television crew even visited the geotope. We were very pleased with the public attention. It was therefore quickly clear that we wanted to enhance this geotope and provide hikers and visitors with information on the spot," says Kim Peis, the head of the GrenzWeltenGeopark. For this reason, the new geo-station has now been erected directly at the edge of the path. Together with a seating area, a nice resting place for visitors and hikers has been created directly on the Eder.
The rocks of the Ederstede were formed around 255 million years ago during the Zechstein (Permian). They are deposits of river systems that occur here instead of marine and lagoonal sediments. The striking steep slope of the Ederstede was formed much later, during the Quaternary period. The Eder was fed with a lot of water by the glacial melt at the end of the ice ages and was able to erode deep into the rocks.
