Barrier-free living
Barrier-free living
For older or impaired people, the search for suitable housing is often difficult. Therefore, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg is working on an overview of barrier-free housing. The publication of a cadastre is planned. People who have barrier-free living space are asked to contact the district.
Who needs barrier-free housing?
Statistically, every eighth person in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district has a recognised disability. In addition to this, every fourth person in Waldeck-Frankenberg is directly affected by a temporary or unrecognised impairment, for example due to an accident or illness. And finally, every person in the district can benefit from comprehensively existing accessibility. Structural accessibility or universal design mean more comfort and safety for all people.
What are the characteristics of barrier-free housing?
Accessibility is when buildings and their circulation areas are as accessible and usable as possible for all people without obstacles. Barrier-free living space is characterised, among other things, by accessibility of all rooms without steps or thresholds, sufficiently wide flat and room doors as well as corridors, sufficient space in the kitchen and bathroom with level access to the shower.
Why is the district committed to accessibility?
The district is committed to a barrier-free living environment because...
- he stands by the ratification of the UN Disability Rights Convention
- there is too little barrier-free housing for people in Waldeck-Frankenberg
- currently not even two per cent of existing dwellings are barrier-free (according to the 2019 microcensus)
- Housing is a basic human need
